Use This Sleep Calculator To Work Out What Time To Go To Bed And Wake Up Happy

According to recent statistics by the British National Psychiatric Morbidity Survey, around 39% of people in England are suffering symptoms of insomnia or disrupted sleep at any one time. Together with this, a report conducted by the Sleep Council called ‘The Great British Bedtime Report’ revealed that the amount of people who claimed that they “sleep very well most nights” has fallen from 25% in 2013 to 17% this year.

According to a recent report by the Telegraph, to ensure a good quality sleep each night, it is more important to work out your sleep cycles, rather than counting the amount of hours of sleep that you are getting. Author and sleep expert Dr Laura Lefkowitz said, “The brain has a pattern of sleep. It’s not like you just fall asleep and hour one is the same as hours two and three and five and nine.“It goes through cycles. Within each there is what we call non-REM [Rapid Eye Movement] sleep, and then REM sleep.”

Relating to this study, retailer web-blinds.com have developed a sleep calculator which allows you to find out the exact time that you should be going to sleep in order to wake up feeling rested and refreshed. According to reports, each sleep cycle lasts around 90 minutes, and you should sleep through five or six of the cycles each night. It is the act of waking up in the middle of a sleep cycle that gives you the feeling of grumpiness and feeling tired, whereas waking up at the end of a sleep cycle will make you rise feeling refreshed and like you have had enough rest, despite the amount of hours that you have slept.

The sleep calculator provides you with a selection of precise times that you should be aiming to go to sleep at, depending on the time that you need to wake up in the morning. To work out your individual ideal bed time, you can try out the sleep calculator here.
