Top 10 Home Remedies of All Time

The best pharmacy for the majority of conditions can be found right inside your home. You don’t require a white coat, stethoscope, or bad hand writing to get many of the remedies you need to overcome an illness. In fact, it’s better in many cases to try home remedies before you go rushing to a doctor because they are not only more effective in many cases, but they are also free of man-made toxins that always have a negative residual effect on our long term health.

This doesn’t mean going to a doctor doesn’t make sense in some cases, but I think you will find that a clean and whole foods diet along with these 10 home remedies will help keep you from having to leave the house for medical expertise. Remember, your body is the best doctor, you just need to give it the tools to do its work.

As with any natural remedy, their effectiveness for you will primarily come down to your overall state of health, and your current diet and mindset. If a couple of these factors are not up to par, results may be diminished.

Antibiotic tonic

One of the most effective natural remedies for early anything that ails you, acute or chronic, is the antibiotic tonic.

Loaded with a synergistic blend of antibacterial, viral, and fungal foods and herbs, as well as a healthy dose of probiotics and vitamin C, this “shot” is a lot like Buckley’s (it may taste awful, but it works) only it is made of all natural ingredients that you can put together in your kitchen.

Make no mistake about it, if you have any type of infection (cold, flu, virus, parasite) this concoction is sure to knock it down, and quite possibly completely out. It also stores for long periods of time in your cupboard, so feel free to make up some bottles and store it for later!

Here are the ingredients to this masterful tonic:

  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 1/2 small onion
  • 1 piece of turmeric (1 inch or 1/4 tsp ground)
  • 1 piece of ginger (1/2 inch or 1/4 tsp ground)
  • 1 lemon
  • 1/2 small jalapeño or dash of cayenne pepper
  • 1 oz of apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp of olive oil
  • Optional: 1 piece of horseradish (1/2 inch)
  • Optional: 1 tsp raw honey
A masticating juicer will create a smooth beverage, but you can also use a blender for a more chunky version, if desired. Simply add the dry and liquid ingredients in at the end for either.

Colloidal silver

Colloidal silver has been known as an effective antibiotic for centuries. In the early 1900’s, Alfred Searle, founder of the Searle pharmaceutical company discovered that it could kill very deadly pathogens.

Recent research has stated that colloidal silver can destroy antibiotic resistant microbes like MRSA, the bird flu, and SARS. In addition to this, the main advantage is that it is deadly to all kinds of unfriendly microbes, without any toxic action on its host.

For safe usage of colloidal silver, the Silver Safety Council recommends using the following formula: 12 x your weight (lbs)/ppm = drops per day of your silver supplement.

Total body tonic

The total body tonic is aptly named as it works to rejuvenate all the core systems in the body that are responsible for efficient detoxification. This potent combination will stimulate your liver, kidneys, digestion, and circulation to ensure that the antibacterial, viral, and fungal nutrients are delivered with a powerful punch.

You can use this tonic on a daily basis to keep infections at bay, or whip it up when you want a little extra power and support to remove whatever is bothering you. It’s actually quite tasty if you like stevia as it brings out the cranberry taste in the drink.

Here are the synergistic blend of ingredients:

  • 2 oz of pure cranberry juice (no sugar added)
  • 1 oz of coconut kefir (optional, but highly suggested)
  • Juice of half a lemon and lime
  • 1/4 tsp of ground ginger
  • 1/4 tsp of ground turmeric
  • Dash of black pepper
  • 1/8 tsp of ground cayenne
  • Optional: Stevia to sweeten

It’s best if you take this on an empty stomach, and will work well before bedtime.

Medicinal mushrooms

Medicinal mushrooms are one of the most dynamic and healing plants on the planet. Their antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal qualities, as well as their immune modulating effects, are what make these mushrooms a must have in your cupboard if you get sick.

Medicinal mushrooms also support the key areas of the body, namely the immune system and the liver, which when healthy will help support a strong attack on foreign invaders and properly detoxify you in our toxin filled world.

They are also exceptional adaptogens, which means they nicely support your adrenals which is crucial to true health in today’s stress filled world. Using them on a daily basis can keep you “grounded” and stress in check, which is a huge plus for keeping illness away.

Oil of oregano

Oil of oregano takes care of pathogenic bacteria with little disruption to beneficial bacteria. It is also antiviral and antifungal, which makes it a powerful three-in-one combination that rivals pharmaceuticals while not encouraging antibiotic resistance.

The key antimicrobial ingredient in oil of oregano is carvacrol. You should ensure that your source is at least 70 percent carvacrol content in order to be effective.

Be careful not to use oil of oregano on a long term basis. Simply have it as part of your natural pharmacy so when a bacterial infection threatens to take you down, you have this powerful medicine at your immediate disposal.

If taking the liquid version, DO NOT take it directly in the mouth or it will BURN. Instead, put 1-2 drops in a small glass of water.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a well known home remedy that has been used effectively for nearly a century. It helps improve the function of the immune cells, as white blood cells depend upon vitamin C in order to survive and withstand attacks of pathogens and free radicals. It also plays an important role as an antihistamine and reduces inflammatory conditions associated with cold, fevers, allergies, and the flu.

What might not be as well known is the most effective forms of it so you can ensure you are getting the most power. Too often with supplementation, the amount of active ingredient and how well it is absorbed is very poor which literally puts your results in the toilet.

My first recommendation is always through whole foods or supplements that present what is found in nature. I personally like camu camu (presented in powder format for easy mixing), but there are other foods high enough in vitamin C to work effectively, and you can see my top 5 here.

Another great choice is liposomal vitamin C, which is packaged like the body’s cells so it passes through the digestive barrier and delivers the nutrient directly into the bloodstream. Due to it’s “nano size” and being encapsulated in liposomes, the absorption rate is much higher with over 90% of the cells being drenched in vitamin C (as compared to those without this encapsulation, which offer about 20% absorption rate into the bloodstream, with the other 80% accumulating in the colon).

Coconut kefir

Coconut kefir is quite simply fermented coconut water. Typically, fermented drinks are recognized as dairy (milk kefir) and tea (kombucha) beverages, and not as much recognition has been given to coconut kefir. This may prove to be a mistake, due to the fact that coconut kefir eliminates the often problematic ingredients of dairy and certain teas for some people’s digestive systems while still allowing you to take in a highly beneficial probiotic beverage.

The benefits of coconut kefir are comprehensive, but, from a high level view, this probiotic beverage is very healing to the digestive system and the liver and creates a strong immune system that is ultimately responsible for your good health.

Kefir also contains beneficial yeasts that are known to hunt out and destroy pathogenic yeasts in the body. These beneficial yeasts are considered the best defense against dangerous yeast organisms like candida. They clean, purify and strengthen the intestinal walls and help the body become more efficient in resisting dangerous pathogens such as E. Coli, salmonella and intestinal parasites.

Eucalyptus oil

There are many essential oils that could be put in the home remedy kit, but eucalyptus is one of the most affordable and flexible in terms of use. There is research that shows that eucalyptus oil strengthens the macrophages, the cells whose job it is to kill infections. It has also been shown to produce its own protective mechanism.

Due to it’s powerful antibacterial and antiseptic properties, eucalyptus oil is commonly used for stomach aches and can be applied right on the skin (if you are unsure, feel free to use a carrier oil). It also is famous for colds and respiratory conditions, and can be placed right on the chest or in a hot bath in order to work as a decongestant and clearing up blocked up noses.

Another great way to clear up blocked nasal passages and congested lungs is by adding a few drops of eucalyptus oil to a large bowl of hot water (being careful to not burn yourself with the water or steam), and placing a towel over your head and the bowl and inhaling the steam.

Himalayan salt

One of the most simple and effective home remedies is Himalayan salt, a salt that has been formed over millions of years in the Himalayas and which contains so many macrominerals and trace minerals that it is actually pink in colour.

Due to its antibacterial and high mineral qualities, himalayan salt can be used in number of ways to help knock down bacteria and bathe the body in alkalinity, both which can be very effective in overcoming a bacterial infection like a cold.

One way to use Himalayan salt is to bathe in it to allow its minerals and negative ions to easily penetrate the skin, producing a cleansing and detoxifying effect that can leave your skin and mind feeling rejuvenated and invigorated for hours thereafter.

Another great use is to put a pinch of good Himalayan salt into a warm glass of water and use it to gargle in the back of the throat, an area where many bacteria will populate quickly when given the opportunity. This procedure will provide a “topical attack” to help knock down the growth and assist your body with a more effective immune response.

You can also add some of this salt to a hot bowl of water (add eucalyptus oil for a synergistic effect) and place a towel over your head to inhale the antibacterial steam directly into your nasal passages and/or lungs. Just be careful with the hot water and inhale gently at first to see how much of this procedure you can handle!

Finally, you can also add pinch of this salt to warm water in a neti pot, to flood the nasal passages with an antibacterial solution that is sure to assist in removal of any infections present and help clear up any congestion.

Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) has become a very popular go to home remedy, and for good reason. This probiotic and enzyme rich powerhouse has many nutrients and co-factors that make it a must in anyones natural pharmacy.

Due to its antibacterial effects and probiotic content, apple cider vinegar is a nice 1-2 punch on colds and sore throats. Put 2 tablespoons in one glass of water, and take up to 3 times daily to help get rid of both. Gargle before swallowing. For a more potent treatment, you can also drink it straight. And for sore throat relief for those who cannot stomach it straight, try gargling with 2 ounces of plain apple cider vinegar and then drink and swallow two ounces mixed with water.

Apple cider vinegar can also be used to fight seasonal allergies by breaking up mucous and and supporting lymphatic drainage. It can also clear your sinuses. Drink 2 tablespoons in a large glass of water, 3 times daily.

Perhaps a bit counterintuitive to many, but ACV is also a very effective remedy for acid reflux and heartburn. Since low stomach acid is mostly to blame for this condition, you can use ACV to naturally raise stomach acid levels, which will in turn provide relief. To treat existing heartburn, take a shot of plain apple cider vinegar (1-2 ounces) and wash it down with some water. It may burn for a moment going down, but it does the trick without the side effects of conventional remedies. You can also add 2 ounces to a cup of room temperature water and drink it up to 15 minutes before a meal will improve digestion and acid reflux.

There are certainly many more home remedies that can be used, but these are 10 that I have used for over a decade that have worked beautifully. Of course, they work much better when combined with a clean, low sugar, and nutrient dense diet. If you are still actively consuming processed foods, sodas, alcohol, and gluten, your results may be hampered.

While home remedies are a step in the right direction, no one wants to constantly be dealing with treating themselves for conditions if they knew how to severely limit cases of illness altogether. Not only that, but there is much more to living than mere survival…and you can experience that blissful state with a complete lifestyle plan that allows you to truly live your best LIFE.
